Gearbox cover
The gearbox cover is a thick cardbox item ultimately designed to keep dirt and sound out of the car. Mine had sat in a sorry state in the corner of the garage for the last few years. You can buy new fibreglass/ plastic items. But taking a look at mine, I thought I could fix it. I also wanted to modify it to allow easier access to the overdrive switches/ speedo drive etc.
I reinforced a couple of areas that were torn, with fibreglass
then I started thinking about the modifications. I wanted easy access to the overdrive switches etc, all of which are at the rear of the gearbox. So I decided to copy something I’d seen online, and split the cover towards the rear.
Then I fibreglassed some flanges to the front part. I wrapped masking tape around the rear first, so that I didn’t inadvertently fibreglass the two halves back together again
trimmed the flanges and painted both halves
Added rubber along the bottom and where the two halves joined
The I drilled some holes for clips and screwed the two halves back together. Job done
Fitted- not without a bit of cursing, but it’s in
